TRIP INTRODUCTION

Poon Hill Trek is ideal for individuals with limited time. It provides an opportunity to view most mountain peaks in Western Nepal from close proximity. This trek is shorter than the Ghorepani-Poon Hill Trek but you will not have to compromise on the experience.

The trek starts from Nayapul and ends in Nayapul. We will first climb to Ghorepani from Nayapul. Poon Hill lies within a small hike from Ghorepani. Poon Hill is a mountain watcher's paradise. It provides an end to end view of some of the tallest mountain peaks in the world. We will return to Nayapul via Tadapani, a typical Gurung village.

The accommodation on the route are either small tea house or homestays. Climbing to Ulleri village via 3,200 stone steps is another high point of the tour. The climb is grueling but this section provides stunning view of Annapurna, Himchuli and Machhapuchhre (fish tail) mountains. The landscape is mostly subtropical and is characterized by deep forests of rhododendron, pine and oak.

DETAIL ITINERARY

Day 01: Drive to Nayapul and Trek to Tikhedhunga

Altitude: 1,540 m/5,052 ft

Time: 3-4 hours

We will start our Ghorepani-Poonhill trek today. We will first drive to Nayapul. It is a one and half hours drive from Pokhara along the beautiful hillside of the Annapurna region. Once we reach Nayapul, we will get our stuffs arranged and start a trek to Tikhedhunga. The trek to Tikhedhunga is mostly flat and gentle.

We will encounter a beautiful village called Birenthanti (1,080 m/3,543 ft) on our way. The path ahead follows the trail of the thundering Modi river. Village like Matathanti, Ramgai, Sudame and Hile lie between Birethanti and Tikhedhunga. Tikhedhunga provides a welcome escape from the noise and pollution you had been subject to in the past few days.

Day 02: Trek to Ghorepani

Altitude: 2,860 m/9,383 ft

Time: 6-7 hours

We will have our breakfast and start a trek to Ghorepani. We will cross the Modi river and then head towards Ulleri. You will need to climb 3,200 stone steps to reach Ulleri Village (2,080 m/6,824 ft). This section of the road provides clear and beautiful view of the Annapurna South, Himchuli and Fish Tail mountains. Ulleri has many shops for buying basic trek supplies. It also has houses and lodges for accommodation.

We will leave Ulleri behind and head for Banthanti (2,300 m/7,545 ft) and Nangethanti (2,450 m/8,038 ft) villages. The road ahead passes through rhododendron forests. Rhododendrons bloom in spring and they turn the entire forest red during that time. We will cross the deep forest and finally reach Ghorepani, which provides a wonderful view of Annapurna, Hiuchuli, Fish Tail and Dhaulagiri mountains.

Day 03: Poon Hill hike and trek to Tadapani

Altitude: Poon Hill (3,210 m/10,531 ft), Tadapani (2,590 m/ 8,497 m)

Time: 6-7 hours

We will wake up very early today as we need to make it to the top of Poon Hill before sunrise. Poon Hill is at a short hike from Ghorepani. You will meet other trekkers at Poon Hill.  Poon Hill provides a panoramic view of the Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, V, Dhampus Peak, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Barah Sikhar, Mt. Fishtail, Nilgiri South and Tukuche mountains. The view of the sun rising over the top of these mountains is wonderful.

We will return back to our lodge for breakfast. Our trek to Tadapani begins after a rest of a few minutes following breakfast. The trek is first uphill to Deurali (2,990 m/9,809 ft). It then goes downhill. Banthanti (2,520 m/8,267 ft) village lies on our way to Tadapani and we will rest for a while before finally reaching Tadapani for the night.

Day 04: Trek to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara

Altitude: Nayapul (1,070 m/ 3,510 ft)

Time: 7-8 hours

Today is the longest part of the trek. We will climb downhill for 6-7 hours before reaching Nayapul, the place where we started our trek from. We will freshen up in Nayapul and then hop into a vehicle waiting for us. It will drive us to Pokhara, where we will check into our hotels. You have the option to return to Kathmandu or extend your trip.
