Annapurna Sanctuary Trek combines the best part of the Ghorepani-Poonhill trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. In these 12 days of trekking, you will experience the warm hospitality of the Gurung and Magar people, who make up most of the population in the region. You will also be face to face with some of the highest and most beautiful mountains in the world.
Annapurna Sanctuary is a mountainous plateau – an oval shaped flat-topped land encircled by high mountains from all sides, save the narrow pass between Mt. Himchuli and Machhapuchhre. Annapurna, Himchuli, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, Annapurna South are some mountains that make up this ring.
The southern part of the sanctuary is full of lush green vegetation, mainly rhododendron, and mountain wildlife. Further north the vegetation is more Tundra like. The northern slope of the sanctuary receives little rainfall; therefore is drier and vegetation is dominated by short bushes and shrubs.
The region is of special religious importance to the Gurung people. They believe it to be home to the ancient Naga people; who are part of the Indian mythology and folklore. The place is also a holy destination for Hindus and Buddhists with various symbolic associations. The sanctuary is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area. Visits are regulated and development activities are restricted to preserve the pristineness of the place. Annapurna Sanctuary Trek combines the best part of the Poonhill trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
