Everest Base Camp Trek is the King of all trekking in Nepal. The highlight of the Everest Base Camp 16 Days Trek is the visit to Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC). The base camp of Everest is at an altitude of 5,365 m. The itinerary of the trek is longer compared to a Everest Base Camp trek and an even shorter 12 day trek to the base camp of Mount Everest. This Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary is designed to allow a day of sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley at the start of the trek and enough acclimatization opportunity.

The Everest Base Camp 16 Days Trek takes you to the Khumbu Valley. The Khumbu valley – where most of the trek takes place – is home of the wonderful Sherpa people. The Sherpas are Buddhists. There are many monasteries in the Everest region like Pangboche, Tengboche and Dingboche. Most of Everest Base Camp Trekking takes place along the banks of the Dudh Koshi river. You will spot many species of endangered plants and animals during the trek. Impeyan Pheasant (Danfe), Snow Pigeon, Mountain Goats, Yak, Snow Leopard are among the animals and birds encountered on the way. Rhododendron, Magnolia and Giant Firs form a majority of vegetation. The forests are dense green with temperate vegetation in the lower belt of Everest Region. The middle belt possesses alpine vegetation. The final stages of the Everest Base Camp Trek is characterized by Tundra vegetation.

The Everest Base Camp Trek starts with a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. We first walk to Namche Bazaar from Lukla. Namche Bazaar is also known as the gateway to Everest. We will part ways with trekkers on the Everest High Pass Trek and Gokyo Lake Trek from Namche. The settlement are sparse as we head north from Namche. Ancient monasteries like Tengboche and Dingboche lie on our road to Everest Base Camp. The most thrilling part of Everest Base Camp trek is the walk along Khumbu glacier just before reaching base camp of Everest. Khumbu is one of the largest glaciers on the planet. Kala Patthar, meaning black rock, is at a higher altitude (5,545 m) than Everest and provides stunning view of the nearby mountain peaks.

The path towards Tengboche is steep and tiring but the path is full of rhododendron trees and endangered birds. You can stop for lunch at Phungi Thanga. The village of Pangboche lies on the way. It is a beautiful place and provides you with an opportunity to rest in the middle of the trek. You will cross a couple of rivers and other small mountainous streams on your way. You will reach Dingboche after a hard uphill trek of about 5-6 hours. Dingboche is a valley surrounded by hills on every direction. It is also known as the gateway to Island peak.

  • Day 08: Dingboche exploration and acclimatization for further journey.
  • 4,400 m/14,435 ft

You need to acclimatize yourself for further journey so we will rest in Dingboche today. Dingboche is a busy place. It is a stop for trekkers and climbers of Mount Everest, Amadablam and Imja Tse (Also known as Island Peak). The beautiful Imja river flows from the eastern part of  Dingboche. You can also pay a visit to the nearby village of Chukung. Another beautiful thing to see today is the stone walls that surround the whole valley of Imja. • 4,900 m/14,435 ft
    10 km/Time: 4-5 hours

We will trek towards Lobuche, which is 600 m above Dingboche. At this stage, it is better to move slowly because of the fast increasing altitude. After crossing Thukla, the road becomes steeper and harder. The surrounding natural beauty will take your exhaustion away. You can see the beautiful view of the sun setting in the mountains of Pumori and Nuptse. You will enjoy a peaceful night at the lodge after a long walk.

  • Day 10: Trek to Gorakshep [5,130 m/ 16,076 ft]. Hike to Everest Base Camp [5,316 m / 17,440 ft] and back to Gorakshep. Estimated distance 15-17 km, estimated duration: 8 - 9 hours.
  • Gorakshep (5,130 m/16,076 ft), Everest Base Camp (5,316 m/17,440 ft)
    15-17 km/Time: 8-9 hours

The road is dangerous because you have to walk through one of the largest glaciers in the world – Khumbu glacier. You will get a very close view of mountains like Nuptse, Pumori, Lhotse, Amadablam and Everest. You will stop for the lunch in Gorakshep and then continue your trek to Everest Base Camp. The path is  challenging due to high altitude and thin air.

You will see stones with the name of dead climbers at EBC. You need to be careful on the trails because the ice movement of glaciers may mislead you. It normally takes 2 to 3 hours to reach to EBC from Gorakshep and about the same time for return.

  • Day 11: Trek to the top of Kalapatthar [5,545 m / 18,192 ft] and Pheriche [4,350 m / 14,271 ft]. Estimated distance: 15 km, estimated duration: 8 - 9 hours.
  • Kalapatthar (5,545 m/ 18,192 ft), Pheriche (4,350 m/14,271 ft)
    15 km/Time: 8-9 hours

We will now head for Kalapatthar. The place is called Kalapatthar because it is full of black stones. From there you will see perfect and clear view of Mt. Everest hidden between two mountains. This is why Everest is called the shy mountain. You will then head towards Pheriche through Gorakshep. We follow the trail of Thukla. The downward trek is easier compared to the one we took on our way up.

  • Day 12: Trek to Phortse Village [3,950 m / 12,959 ft]. Estimated distance: 10 -11 km, estimated duration: 4 - 5 hours.
  • 3,950 m/ 12,959 ft
    10-11 Km/Time: 4-5 hours

You’ll take a different path for coming back Instead of returning from the same old path you took on the way up. The early morning view of Kangneta, Thamaserku, Khumbu La and Kongde Ri peaks is stunning from Pheriche. The path is flat at first but starts to move down gradually. You’ll have to trek for almost 4 to 5 hours to reach Phortse. The village of Phortse, settled mainly by the Sherpa people, does not lie on the main Everest Base Camp trail. It is less explored compared to other popular villages like Pangboche and Dingboche. The villagers of Phortse are very hospitable and an evening with them provides a wonderful cultural experience.

  • Day 13: Trek to Monjo [2,835 m / 9,301 ft]. Estimated distance: 14 -15 km, estimated duration: 6 - 7 hours.
  • 2,835 m / 9,301 ft
    14-15 Km/Time: 6-7 Hours

You’ll have to trek for 6 to 7 hours to reach Monjo. The path will be easy compared to uphill trails. You will find a terrific viewpoint named Mong-la on the way. You will have your lunch at Namche before reaching Monjo. Monjo is a popular resting place for people on the way to and returning from the Everest Base Camp Trek. There are guest houses and tea houses for the night’s stay at Monjo but you also have the option to camp in tents. It is environmentally friendly and the experience is thrilling.

  • Day 14: Trek to Lukla [2,850 m / 9,350 ft]. Estimated distance: 11 km, estimated duration: 4 - 5 hours.
  • 2,850 m / 9,350 ft
    10-11 Km/Time:4-5 Hours

You will head towards Lukla after spending a night in Monjo. You will follow the same path you took for the first and second day of your trek. The night will be your last night in the mountains of the Everest region. Your guides will inquire about and fix flight ticket back to Kathmandu. You will meet a lot of trekkers at Lukla. Some of them will be about to start the trek to Everest Base Camp and surrounding destinations while others will be about to return to Kathmandu like you.

  • Day 15: Fly Back to Kathmandu Rest of the day free
